How does the NHSTA define distracted driving? It includes most of the activities you’d think would make the list. Talking on the phone, texting, and eating while driving are common types of distracted driving. But that’s just being specific. Basically, anything that takes your attention away from the road constitutes distracted driving.

Why is it so dangerous?

There are visual, manual, and cognitive distractions. This is why texting is so dangerous — it involves all three. If you are traveling 55 mph, then the distance you will cover while sending a text is the average length of a football field. There is a potential for tragedy in those 100 yards of road.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a higher percentage of US drivers talk and text compared to their European counterparts.

While research agencies continue to study the problem, the best medicine for now would seem to be education on the subject.
